Frosty the Snowman

Next in the 31 Days of Christmas lineup is another Rankin/Bass production....Frosty the Snowman (1969)
I had to watch a few more Christmas shows before I reviewed this one just to make sure I wasn't becoming jaded because while watching Frosty I kept thinking of at least a dozen other things I could be doing. In fact cleaning the toilet with my hair was starting to sound like fun!
For those who don't know the storyline to this classic (firstly what cave you been living in?) it's about a snowman built by school children on Christmas Eve who comes to life after a discarded magician's hat lands on his head. (Why were these kids in school on Christmas Eve anyway?) Meanwhile the Magician, Professor Hinkle, decides he wants his hat back.
Frosty, sensing the heat is rising, heads to the North Pole along with Karen, the school girl who made his head, and the rabbit that once lived in his hat. After finding out a train ticket costs $3000.04 they stow away on a refrigerated train car. Hinkle follows them. Karen nearly freezes in the refrigerated car (while Hinkle seems to remain toasty warm riding underneath the train in the cold going at least 50mph...makes sense to me) so they jump off the train. (to warm themselves in the snow?)
Wow, retelling this one seems to be just as agonizing as watching it the first time so I will cut it short. It ends with Hinkle locking them in a greenhouse where Frosty melts. Santa comes along and tells Karen that since Frosty was made with Christmas snow he will be back next year. Santa also punishes Hinkle by making him write "I'm sorry for what I did to Frosty" one hundred zillion times. Now while you might think that is a light sentence for a murderer, think about the last time you actually used a pencil instead of a keyboard to write anything more than a few pages. Ouch! Makes my wrists cramp just thinking about it!
If not for gems like Rudolph and The Year Without a Santa Claus I would say that Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass should have to write a few zillion sentences of their own.
I give Frosty the
Snoozeman
Snowman
Two Charlie Brown Christmas Trees (It would have gotten one if not for the adorability (yeah it's a word, I just made it up!) of Karen's snazzy red dress and matching earmuffs)
